Hwa-Rang
29 moves
The Hwa-Rang were an elite youth grou of scholars and martial artists during the Silla Dynasty (7th century). The 29 moves represent the 29th Infantry Division of the Korean Military where Taekwondo developed to maturity.
This is the first non-symmetrical form that students learn.
Start in ready stance with feet together and both hands down with the fingertips of the left hand crossing over the fingertips of the right hand.
Step with the left foot outward into a riding stance facing North. Extend the left palm outward.
Right hand middle punch while maintaining the same stance.
Left hand middle punch while maintaining the same stance. Kihap.
While staying mostly in the same place, turn into a right back stance facing East. Twin out forearm block.
Maintaining the same stance, pull the right fist to the left shoulder, as if grabbing someone and jerking them in. Upset punch with the left hand.
Move the right foot to the left foot, then lunge out into a deep back left back stance facing East. Middle punch with the right hand.
Pull the right foot to the left foot again and stand up straight. Downward knifehand strike with the right hand.
Step with the left foot into a left front stance facing East. Left hand middle punch.
Step and rotate with the left foot into a front stance facing North. Left hand low block.
Step forward into a right front stance facing North. Right hand middle punch.
Grab the right wrist with the left hand as if wresting away from a grab. Jerk both hands back while executing a sliding side kick with the right foot, bringing the left foot up where the right foot used to be. Kihap.
Lower the right foot down into a right back stance facing North. Right knifehand strike.
Step forward into a left front stance facing North. Left middle punch.
Step forward into a right front stance facing North. Right middle punch.
Pick up the left foot and rotate counterclockwise into a left back stance facing East. Twin knifehand guarding block.
Step forward into a right front stance facing East. Supported spear finger with right hand.
Move the right foot slightly across, then turn and move the left foot across and out to turn around into a left back stance facing West. Twin knifehand guarding block.
Right roundhouse kick to the West.
Left roundhouse kick to the West. Land in a left back stance facing West and twin knifehand guarding block.
Pick up the left foot and step into a front stance facing South. Low block with left hand.
Shift the left foot across and inward so that you are now in a left back stance facing South. Back hand middle punch.
Step into a right back stance facing South. Back hand middle punch.
Step into a left back stance facing South. Back hand middle punch.
Shift the left foot across and outward so that you are now in a left front stance facing South. Low X-block.
Step forward, sliding slighly and turning so that you are now in a left back stance facing North. Despite this, your attention and focus should be to the South. Deliver a double backwards elbow strike with both arms. Kihap.
Pick up the left foot and rotate counterclockwise until standing straight with both feet together facing West. In this position, start with the left hand raised in an inside block while the right hand is doing a low block. Swiftly do a right hand inside block and left hand low block at the same time.
Reverse the previous movement, doing a left inside block and right low block at the same time. Do #26 and #27 together quickly.
Step with the left foot out into a left back stance facing West. Twin knifehand guarding block.
Bring the left foot in to the right foot and then step with the right foot out into a right back stance facing East. Twin knifehand guarding block. Kihap.
