High Brown Belt Techniques and Exercises

“Open” means both partners have mirrored stances (e.g. if one partner is in left stance, the other is in right stance)

“Closed” means both partners have the same foot forward (e.g. both have right foot forward).

Stepping “outside” means stepping toward the attacker’s back.

Stepping “inside” means stepping toward the attacker’s front.

Techniques

Both partners begin in closed stance. Attacker performs the attacking technique. Defender performs the defense and then the counter. Generally, the attack is a sliding kick and the defense is a back-leg kick of the same type followed by back-hand punch. Attacker jump switches and then both partners perform their roles on the other side.  Then the former defender goes on the attack.

Attack Defense Counter
1 Sliding front kick Slide back; low block Back-leg front kick, back-hand punch
2 Sliding roundhouse kick Slide back; double-forearm block Back-leg roundhouse kick, back-hand punch
3 Sliding side kick Slide back; sweeping low block Turning side kick, back-hand punch
4 Sliding hook kick Slide back; duck Turning hook kick, back-hand punch

Exercises

Begins immediately after the end of Techniques. This entire series is called an “8-count.” The series is executed with first front kick, then roundhouse, then side kick, then hook kick. For side kick and hook kick, substitute “turning kick” for “back-leg kick.” By the end of each 8-count, both partners will have executed a sliding and a back-leg/turning kick with each leg. Partner 1 must be aware that after Step 8, the next kick is a new kick.
